Tar City
Tar City is giving “shadow daddy” but make it tar — Jax St. Clair is a biker bartender who’s literally being consumed by the sentient tar pit running under his cursed city, and on full moons it makes him do things he can’t control. Dual POV, then-and-now timeline, ballerina-comes-back-to-the-boy-she-left kind of second-chance setup, and touch-her-and-die energy that readers keep calling out by name. It’s toxic, it’s possessive, there’s a surprise pregnancy twist, and the found-family side cast (RIP to your heart, Scotch the dog) does a lot of heavy lifting. Reviewers keep saying to check the trigger warnings before diving in — apparently the author wrote them in Jax’s own voice, so that should tell you something about the tone. If you want dark romance with paranormal weirdness, banter, and an ending you actually get to keep, Tar City is calling.

Content Warnings
Expect body horror tied to the supernatural tar (blackened fingers, glowing eyes, people being slowly "consumed"), violence and implied killing since the hero is used as an enforcer/assassin by the entity controlling him, and a central relationship both the author and reviewers openly acknowledge as toxic and possessive — lots of pushing away "to protect her," obsessive control, and trauma-bonding. There's a surprise pregnancy subplot (a twist, not planned) and general psychological manipulation from the tar's hold over Jax. One reviewer flagged the pacing/emotional whiplash as intense but not graphic on-page.
