Vow of Eternal Night
Okay, the marketing on this one is doing A LOT of heavy lifting, fam — “cure my curse or become my bride for eternity” sounds like prime dark romance bait, but Vow of Eternal Night is giving cozy Beauty-and-the-Beast romantasy energy way more than dark anything. Raleigh’s less brooding monster, more chaotic bisexual-king-with-Astarion-vibes, and multiple reviewers called this out as one of the healthiest romance dynamics they’ve read in a while — not exactly touch-her-and-die material. You get the forced-marriage setup, a genuinely glacial enemies-to-lovers burn, a sentient castle that rearranges its own hallways for fun, and a found-family cast that steals scenes. Just know going in: this is a low-spice, gothic-flavored fairytale, not a dark romance gut-punch — go in expecting soft-monster energy, not intensity, and you’ll have a great time.

Heads up on a few things before you dive in: there's murder in the backstory (the prince killed Clara's mother, aunt, and other villagers years before the story starts — not shown graphically on-page), plus a village decimated by an engineered famine. Clara is essentially forced into an arranged/forced marriage and taken to the prince's castle against her will, so expect kidnapping and captivity/imprisonment themes throughout. There's real coercion and manipulation/gaslighting layered in — her father lies to and manipulates her for his own gain, and the prince's "cure me or marry me" ultimatum keeps the power dynamic heavily skewed in his favor. Several reviewers explicitly flagged the central romance as reading like Stockholm syndrome and called the relationship dynamic confusing/toxic given the captor-captive setup — worth knowing if that's a hard pass for you, even though the book itself is otherwise fairly gentle and low-spice.
