H.D. Carlton just confirmed what the Cat and Mouse Duet fandom has been begging for since the book first went viral: Haunting Adeline is officially being adapted into a movie.
In a video message to fans, Carlton addressed the elephant in the room head-on — hadn’t she once said she wouldn’t sell the film rights? Didn’t she also say she wanted a TV series, not a movie? Her answer: things changed the moment she found her creative match. Carlton revealed she’s partnered with a Hollywood producer she describes as her equal in intensity and vision, and the two are co-executive producing the project together. She was clear that this isn’t a hands-off deal — she says she has creative input on the script, casting, music, and set design, and describes the relationship as a true partnership rather than a studio buyout.
Why a movie and not a series?
Carlton explained that the decision came down to creative control. According to her, no streaming platform or network currently on the table was willing to adapt the story faithfully without watering it down or reshaping it to fit their own content standards. Rather than risk the story being sanitized episode by episode, she and her producing partner chose the film route so they could protect the tone and substance of the source material.
What fans should expect
Condensing a 600-page novel into a roughly two-and-a-half-hour runtime means some trims are inevitable, and Carlton acknowledged that changes will happen. But she was firm that nothing “substantial” to the story will be cut, and confirmed that her own writing will be woven directly into the script, with key scenes from the book making it to screen intact.
The casting question
Zade’s casting is, unsurprisingly, the detail fans care about most. Carlton didn’t name names, but she acknowledged the intensity of fan-casting debates and promised that whoever is cast will be chosen to match her original vision for the character as closely as possible — not necessarily who the internet has already decided on.
Fans get a front-row seat
In a move clearly aimed at keeping the community close through the process, Carlton announced plans for a behind-the-scenes docu-series that will let fans follow the adaptation as it’s made, with opportunities to weigh in along the way.
